Douglas Jerome Butler, Sr.
March 21, 1933 –November 18, 2015
Born in Los Angeles, CA went to the Lord in Ridgecrest, CA at the age of 82.

Butler (1)Upon graduating from Burroughs, he served in the Army and received an Honorable Discharge.

Because of his love of cars, he went from being a top salesman, several times, to owning and running a Ford Lincoln Mercury Dealership with Rosie, the love of his life. Doug had a real passion for races, from the horses to cars. When he had the dealership, he also had a 1966 stock car, Lil Red, that won both the Winter and Spring Nationals.

After he retired, 19 years ago, both he and Rosie moved to Crowley Lake, CA due to their love of the mountains and his love of fishing. Within a few years, he started DB’s Hardwood and DB’s Fishing Guide Service, where he was well respected and liked by all. He soon gained a reputation for his honesty and warm personality and his word of mouth business was booming.

Doug had a gift of making everyone feel comfortable, if you just met him, you would have thought you’d known him for years. He was a friend to everyone, to know Doug was to love Doug.

He took great pride in helping others, and was a big supporter of Disabled Sports. He would take ‘Wounded Warriors’ fishing, even if he wasn’t feeling so hot, he’d say “it wasn’t about him-it was about them! And if he could bring them a little bit of joy, then dadgum, he was going to do it!”

Doug is survived by his beautiful bride of 56 years Rosie; Children Doug Jr., Janet (husband Ken), Michele (husband Michael), Mark and fiancée Teresa. Grandchildren Katie, Tanner, MacKinzie, and Mason. He is preceded in death by his parents, Charlie and Marti, and brother Dan.

Darrell Lloyd Moose, referred to as “Dandy” by his mother, “Pink Floyd” by his siblings, “Dad” by his children and “Moose” by most, passed away on Thursday, November 26, 2015 in Bishop, California while resting on a trail he had frequently walked since childhood. He was 62 years old.

Moose

Darrell was born on June 9, 1953 at Northern Inyo Hospital, Bishop, California to Nelson Moose and Bertha Collins Moose. He was the second born in a family of seven, raised in Bishop on Brockman Lane. He resided both in Bishop and most recently in Big Pine during most of his adult life. He attended Bishop Union High School.

As a young man, Darrell was employed by the Inyo National Forest Fire Organization as part of the hotshot crew and later as a member of the helitack crew based out of Lone Pine, California at that time. He was offered a position with the National Forest Service and assigned to the Lake Tahoe Basin. Later in life he was employed with the Union Pacific Railroad originating out of Kansas for a number of years. He also worked for the Bishop and/or Big Pine Tribes when construction projects were available, but the work he valued most was Cultural Monitoring for the tribe. Darrell had a wandering spirit that took him down many roads. When he was in a good place he burned his sage every morning offering his prayers. He was happiest cruising the back roads and fishing at his favorite spots.

Darrell was blessed with a large and loving family. He was married and divorced to Denyse McKellips Moose. He is survived by:

Mule Days founder Bob Tanner dies

By Deb Murphy

Bob Tanner lived a glorious, enviable life. He was a packer, an author, a founder of Bishop’s Mule Days, a football coach, the face and voice for pack stations when the lifestyle was threatened by government regulation and the driving force behind the vision of a mule museum in Bishop.

Bob Tanner

Tanner died December 3.

Like many Eastern Sierra residents, he was drawn back to the place of family vacations from his home in Southern California, working his way through college as a packer in the backcountry, learning the craft. After college and a stint in the Navy during the Korean War, he came back, permanently.

In 1953, he went to work for Archie Mann at Red’s Meadow Pack Station. Seven years later he bought the operation and spent the next five decades sharing the Eastern Sierra with tourists, celebrities and politicians.

tanner1 He learned the best mules came from the southeast, crosses between drafts and donkeys. He learned the art of shoeing, how to tie knots, how to feed both his employees and his stock and he learned every inch of the 175 square miles of wilderness in Yosemite National Park and the John Muir Wilderness that was part of his Red’s Meadows’ permit.

In 1969, he and Leo Potterfield had a conversation about some of the memorable moments of life as a packer and what a good show that would be. That winter saw record snowfall, leaving the trails in the backcountry snow-covered until August and hobbling the pack stations. The solution to the industry’s grave cash flow was Tanner’s vision of a raucous mule show, Mule Days, a celebration of all things mule and a sneak-peek at what packers and their mules have to deal with. The Memorial Day weekend event became one of the premier mule shows, drawing talented mules from all over the country.

Bob Tanner and the 20 mule team mule days parade

But Tanner wasn’t one to rest on his laurels. When Mule Days got bogged down with show classes that only an enthusiastic equestrian could appreciate, Tanner shook things up, turning the clock back to the original intent: fun.

When law suits threatened to regulate the packers into oblivion, it was Tanner who spoke to the media, speaking simply about the heritage and value of an industry that took visitors deep into the beauty of the Sierra.

american mule museum

Tanner didn’t stop with Mule Days. His next vision was the American Mule Museum, a work in progress that started with seed money from the federal government. When the project funding was used as an example of government “pork” on CNN in 2007, Tanner wasn’t discouraged telling Sierra Wave “we made Mule Days something; we can make this thing something.”

Tanner will be missed, but he left enough of himself behind for both locals and visitors to the Sierra to remember and enjoy. He left a son, Bobby, with the ability to handle the famous 20-Mule Team, he left his mark on Mule Days and the countless volunteers and participants over the past 45 years, on the 1957 Bishop Broncos football team that claimed the CIF division championship and the inevitable American Mule Museum.

After all the children left the nest, Patricia spent more time doing her heart felt desire of Christian Ministry.  Preaching the Good News of Gods Kingdom to anyone who would listen, from Lone Pine, CA to Old Benton, from Keeler to Aspendale. She made friends with people in Chalfant, both east and west sides, Hamill Valley and Benton.  If someone needed a partner to work with she would make herself available.

Survivors include step-son Edward Riggins and wife donna; sons Richard Robertson, Harris Riggins Jr., and wife Maryann, and Ken Riggins; Eight grandchildren: Katie Riggins, Jessica Murray, Mike Riggins, Lisa Johnston, Chris Riggins,  Sierra Shunkwiler, Starla Shunkwiler, and Ashley Shunkwiler; Seven Great Grandchildren: Darren Dondero, Levi Williams, Chet Jenkins, Demi Jenkins, Ruby Jenkins, Kaiya Bradshaw, and Draiden Roberts.

Robert “Bob” Bruce Miller, November 6, 1923 – January 9, 2016

Bob passed peacefully from this earth on January 9, 2016 after a short illness. He was engaged, interactive, independent, and happy to the last day of his life.

Bob Miller

Bob was born in Des Moines, Iowa to Esther Jane and Gilford Miller. He attended Iowa State College in 1943 and, although he did not serve in the military in World War II because of hearing loss he worked as a Survey Rodman at Hanford Engineer Works in Pasco, Washington and as a Survey Instrument Man at North Island Naval Air Station in San Diego. In 1945 he took his first job as a Draftsman working for Rock Island Railroad in Belknap, Iowa.

He moved with his parents to Miami, Florida in 1946 where he met Doris Elizabeth Masters. They were married in 1948. He raised Doris’ first child Mary Lou McClure (b. 1941) and together they had three more children, Robert Morgan (b. 1948), Clark Masters (b. 1950, d. 1967), and Shawn (b. 1955).

Bob practiced architecture for over 40 years. He was both an artistic Draftsman and innovative Designer. He designed the Ferré Building (New World Tower) in 1963, the then tallest building in Miami. His greatest design influencers included Frank Lloyd Wright, Le Corbusier, Louis Sullivan, Louis Kahn, the fibonacci series, and nature. He was very proud of establishing a draftsman training school in Miami to help young draftsmen become licensed architects.

In 1975, Bob moved from Miami to California where he lived in Dana Point and Bishop. In spite of his architectural successes, Bob’s true passion lay in other art forms and in 1994 he was finally able to set up his home and shop in the shadows of his beloved Sierra Nevada and White Mountains. Bob spent countless hours in the last 20 years of his life exploring, photographing, and sketching these mountains.  His many art forms included pencil, charcoal, conte, and pastel drawing; black and white photography; oil painting; cast bronze, ceramic, and marble sculpture; and art from found objects. His works were shown at Spellbinder Books, East Side Books, and are currently displayed at Range & River Books.

While living in Bishop, his daily routine included an early walk on Mandich Lane, then a walk from the south end of town to Schats Bakkery, and then back with stops at Bishop Art Supply, Black Sheep Coffee, Joseph’s, the library, and Range & River Books, visiting with friends and strangers along the way.

Conversation topics were as diverse as his interests. Sketching, painting, and reading filled each day, and many people knew him from his extended plein air drawing sessions as he captured the trees or mountains in exquisite and exacting detail. Some drawings were in progress for years.

Favorite subjects for both hiking and drawing included the Buttermilk area, Bishop Creek, the Little Lakes Valley and surrounding peaks, Piute Pass and Bishop Pass trails, and Little Egypt. Gnarled cottonwood trees, Russian olives, horses and other animals were favorite subjects as well as portraits. In the past year, he began studying the internet and computers in order to list his works, with help from a friend, on the Fine Arts America site. His desire to learn new things was ceaseless, and his focused study of any topic was inspirational to many friends. He also adored mentoring younger artists.

Bob’s diverse talents also included playing the saxophone until an accident took the tip of his finger. He built golf clubs, fine furniture, stained glass lamps, and worked on race car engines. Bob was an avid bird hunter and a talented athlete; he walked almost every day of his life and also worked several years as a fitness trainer at a local gym, taking up weightlifting in his 70’s.

In spite of the miles of separation, Bob remained the nucleus of his family until the end. We will miss our long phone conversations, updates on other family members and the inspiration and wisdom he imparted. We will not be able to visit these mountains without experiencing the indelible void his passing brings. May he walk in peace with his creator as he walked among these mountains.

Bob is survived by Rob (and Cheryle) Miller, Shawn (and Ron) Leis, step daughter Mary Lou Rada; grandchildren Matthieu Miller, Kristen Miller, Justin Veloso, Nicole Veloso, Laney Rada, Michael Rada; great grandchildren Karlos Rodriguez, Emmanuelle Genoyer, Luke Genoyer; and many, many friends.

Services will be held in Bishop in late spring or early summer. Please go to www.rangeandriverbooks.com for more information.

Her warm embrace, her out stretched hands, her generous nature and her loving eyes are felt, once again, by those who have been waiting for her patiently on the other side of this miraculous and wonderous life. She shared these gifts with those of us left behind readily, consistently, freely and selflessly, for which all of us are eternally grateful. Her impact in so many people’s lives; from family to friends, to families of friends and often times complete strangers, was a gift from God, as real as it gets and right here on earth.

Born September 26, 1930 in Stockton, Ca. to George and Minnie Bauer. They moved to Oakland, Ca. and then settled in San Francisco, Ca. where Beverly went to grammar school, junior high school and graduated from Mission High School in 1948, where she met her husband of almost 60 years, Walter William Efsaif.

They were married in 1950, had their first child, Laurie Lee, in 1951, their second child, Michael Dennis, in 1953 and third child, Jo Ann, in 1956. The family moved from San Francisco to Redwood City, Ca. in 1957 and settled in to a magical lifetime of sharing their love and joys with friends and family, establishing themselves as a warm and inviting household, where all were welcome, anytime.

Beverly lived a full and rich life. Beverly and Walter traveled to many places together around the world with lifelong friends. She worked alongside her husband Walter for many years in his CPA office. She had an amazing ability to learn quickly, to assist her family and friends in any capacity. She was an office assistant, bookkeeper, did home improvement, wood splitting, gardening, sewing and cooking.

She had the gift to organize anything she touched. Sincerely, she could walk into a situation and when she walked out it was in order. She taught everyone to appreciate music, dancing, God, playing, singing but most all loving. After retiring to Donner Lake, CA Beverly worked as a teacher’s aide with special needs children. She had an amazing affect on her students. Wherever Beverly lived she was not only devoted to her family and friends she was very active in her community with her church, bible study and senior center.

Beverly was predeceased by her husband, Walter William Efsaif, and is survived by her three children, Laurie E Douglas of Torrance, CA, Michael D. Efsaif of Roseville, CA and Jo Ann E Stoltz of Bishop, CA. She was a loving grandmother to Michael W. Douglas, Justin G. Douglas, Melissa K. and William D. Guilford, Jamaica Thomas, Rebecca and Ry Jackson, Kaitlin M. Efsaif and Adam Booker. Beverly adored her great grandchildren to the core, Kadence, Kaili and Brady Guilford, Kyle and Jake Thomas, Carter Jackson and Ashlyn Booker.

Beverly has left her legacy within each and every one of us. As her family we are so lucky to have had such a beautiful example to live by. We will carry you with us always mom, gram and great gram, Auntie Bev, Bev my friend.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the First United Methodist Church at 10:00 am on Tuesday January 26, 2016 with reception to follow.

George Pendleton passed away peacefully in his sleep at the age of 54 on Jan. 14th 2016. He was preceded in death by his father, George; his mother, Patricia; and brother, Matt. He is survived by his brother, Greg; sister, Merri; son, George; daughter, Kayla; stepdaughter, Dianna; 6 grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

George Pendleton

George was born in Jackson, Mississippi on March 5th 1961 as the youngest child in the family. His father was in the military so his family moved often in his early childhood. George lived in Tucson, Az. and Grand Forks, ND. as a young boy and would often talk about how much fun it was as a kid ice skating and playing hockey on a pond in back of his house that he and the other kids in the neighborhood had made.

George moved to Long Beach, Ca. in 1969 where he went to junior high at Lindbergh, and high school at Long Beach Jordan. After high school he continued to live in Long Beach where he met Marty Slay. They were married July 10th 1984 and continued to live in Long Beach raising Marty’s daughter Dianna.

On Dec. 19th 1987 George’s son was born and his daughter on Mar 24th 1994. George was a very loving and caring family man and a good provider and worked many jobs to support the family while Marty went to school.

In March of 1995, tired of traffic and the fast pace of big city life, they moved the family to Bishop. George worked awhile as a plumber for Scultz plumbing, then worked for High Sierra Plastics before finding a home at B&J Rubber Products, where he worked for almost 20 years.

George really loved living in Bishop and read up on its history. He could name off all the mountain peaks in site, and loved getting up into the backcountry. George was an avid fisherman and spent many hours on Lake Sabrina and the Owens river looking for that monster trout. In fact, George’s nickname was the Trout Whisperer.

He also loved to play golf and was a member of Bishop Country Club.

Another passion of George’s was motorcycling. He was a member of United We Ride and was Vice President off and on for many years. He was a very skilled rider and the enjoyed riding as often as he could. He would always talk about how much fun he had on the rides and how much he enjoyed the people he rode with.

George loved the blues and could name off the artist at the beginning of every song. Quit often he would be listening to his favorite blues artist BB King while on these rides.

George was very intelligent and almost always had an opinion on just about anything you wanted to talk about. He was a very friendly and personal man. He would always make time for someone and would be happy to help out in any way he could. He was a great friend to all that knew him.

A celebration of life will take place sometime this summer at Lake Sabrina after the ice thaws. Time and date will be posted later this year.
