– Information from Inyo County Sheriff’s Office

On August 5th at about 5:20pm, the Inyo County Sheriff’s Office was notified through CalOES of a SPOT device activation near Jigsaw Pass. The activation was followed by a message asking for a helicopter for an immediate evacuation due to an injury. A short time later another message was sent saying, “fatality.” Two Inyo County SAR members responded to the coordinates of the SPOT activation.

inyosar1

On August 6th at about 7:00am, CHP H-80 arrived and with the assistance of the Inyo County SAR team, H-80 was able to recover the body of Stephanie Subak (58 years old from Seattle, WA) and transport her to the Sheriff’s Posse Hut near the Bishop airport, where she was then driven to Brune Mortuary.

Interviews conducted with her hiking friends who were with her at the time of the accident indicated that Subak was descending down Jigsaw Pass when a rock that she grabbed onto gave way, causing her to tumble about 40 feet down a chute.

Once Subak’s partners got to her, she was unconscious but breathing; she passed away about an hour later. According to the coroner Subak sustained multiple traumatic injuries that caused her death.

The Inyo County Sheriff’s Office extends our sincere condolences to Subak’s family and friends during this very difficult time. We also would like to thank the Inyo County SAR team and H-80 for their response efforts.

Lynn Hughes was a well loved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, teacher, coach and friend, who began his life in Inglewood with parents Wallace and Pauline Hughes. He spent his early years in Lomita and in college played football at OU and Long Beach State.
Lynn_Hughes by Dave Hodge
He loved to run. After surviving cancer in 1980 he took up running to get in shape and never quit. He ran up and down the Grand Canyon, multiple Catalina marathons, ultra-marathons, and even half of the Western States 100-mile run before his knee gave out – and he ran as often as he could after moving to Bishop. The only thing that could stop him from running was a brain tumor.
At 38, Lynn went back to teaching and spent five years going to night school, teaching and coaching full-time, and painting apartments on weekends to give his family a better life. His first teaching position was at Narbonne, his high-school alma mater. All that experience and hard work led him in 1992 to Bishop Union High School and a job he loved. There he coached football for many years and was a favorite math teacher, retiring in June 2013. He not only loved his job, he loved his students and his colleagues (well, most of them). His patience and positive attitude guided countless students through their struggles with math and helped them believe in themselves.
Lynn always worked summer school so he and Ruth could vacation on his beloved Kauai each year. He had a great attitude about life and was always positive. He made many wonderful friends and was a wonderful friend in return. He loved and supported his extended family and took great care of his father-in-law.
He loved his family in such a way that each had a special connection and he left an indelible impression in their hearts. He leaves behind his wife of 39 years, Ruth; sons, Travis and Mike, and daughter, Lindsay; daughters-in-law, Melanie and Jodi; sisters Connie and Patty; sister and brother-in-law, Kathie and Michael Lewis. He loved being a grandfather and is survived by six grandchildren, Cameron, Madeleine, Emma, Sophia, Emerson and Collette; along with nieces and nephews.
A memorial service is planned for Saturday, Aug. 22, at 3 p.m. on the lawn at BUHS.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Carson Tahoe Cancer Resource Center/Merriner Cottages,  1535 Medical Parkway, Carson City, NV 89703.

Jack Joseph Yaeger was called to be with his heavenly Father on September 14, 2015. Jack was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grand father and friend to many in the Bishop community. Born July 8, 1925, in Buffalo, New York, to Joe and Theresa Yaeger, Jack spent the last 23 years living in Bishop with Mary, his loving wife of 55 years.

JackYeager

Jack’s children, daughter Julie Smith of Los Gatos, son Philip Yaeger of Costa Mesa, daughter Jackie Robinson of Bishop, daughter Mary Houghtaling of Crowley Lake, and daughter Jeanne Woo of Mammoth Lakes celebrated his 90th Birthday just this year. Also joining in the celebration were Jack’s 2 sons-in-law, a daughter in-law, 6 grandchildren, a great grandson, his sisters Marge and Shirley and their husbands from Buffalo, a niece from Chicago, and many local friends.

Jack loved to give of his time to his many favorite organizations in the Bishop community. You could find Jack selling tootsie-rolls in front of Manor Market or Vons, selling hot dogs at the fair, picking up trash along 395, securing sponsorships from local vendors, and greeting members each week at church.

Jack also spent many hours on the fairways at Bishop County Club and fishing the many lakes, streams and along the banks of the Owens River. Christine Bodine

January 2, 1919 – August 18, 2015

Chris passed away August 18, 2015, at the Bishop Care Center. She was 96.

Bodine

Born in Lindsay, Oklahoma to Charles Cunningham. Chris’ father died when she was young and her much older brother left, leaving her and her mother Mary Rogers, known to the family as Ms. Crum, to live off the land in rural Oklahoma. The Great Dust Bowl chased off Chris and Ms Crum to California. She was Rosey the Riveter during WW II, assembling bulletproof gas tanks for fighter planes.

She met John Bodine in Southern California and married in 1942 She used to dance to Benny Goodman band and digging up beaches during the grunion runs. The two moved to the suburbs, a house and a car, John Charles came in 1944 and Terry followed in 1950. It was as a mother that Chris found her true calling. She was the best cook even after losing her sense of smell when she was in her 50s. The first thing she would say when you say her was usually, “Did you have something to eat, honey?”

She worked as a volunteer most of her life at local hospitals and headed up the Candy Stripers organization. Started her first paying job at the age of 60 working at Northern Inyo Hospital in the collections department.

She had an outgoing spirit, a very giving nature and loved animals. There were plenty of camping trips and endless supplies of biscuits and gravy or short spaghetti. Bodine’s like to eat.

Chris had a grace and generosity that was genuine and never lost to age. She could make friends in an instant and had thousands of them, some from second grade that still kept in touch. She had an outgoing spirit and loved animals. She was the sweetest person you’d ever meet. This place has lost a light, and its a little dark, but she was bright enough to keep shining long after she’s gone.

Christine was preceded in death by her husband John A. Bodine and son John C. Bodine. She is survived by daughter Terry Pledger of Newhall, CA. Grandsons Mike Bodine of Bishop and Charlie Bodine of Agua Dulce, CA. Great Grandchildren Diana Bodine of Bishop, CA and J.C. Bodine of Agua Dulce, CA, Also Rita Heller of Michigan and Claudie Montgomery of Oregon.

Jacaline J. “Jackie” Pollett passed away Friday, Sept. 4, 2015 after a sudden illness. A memorial service for Jackie was held Sunday, Sept. 20, 1 p.m. at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8988, with Dee Dee Costello and the VFW members officiating.

Jackie3

Jackie was born in Bishop on September 16, 1958 to Thomas and Mildred Pollett. She had two siblings, Duane Hilton and Terry Pollett.

After graduating from Bishop Union High School in 1977, Jackie briefly moved to Arizona with her parents and attended Taft College before returning to Bishop. She began a career in health care support, first working in billing for radiologist Dr. Wilfred Wells, MD, from 1987 until Dr. Wells retired in 1999; and then working at Northern Inyo Hospital for the past 16 years. Most recently, Jackie served as the Administrative Assistant for the hospital’s Performance Excellence office.

A kind woman with a big heart, Jackie was known among the hospital staff as the “Candy Lady,” for the large dish of treats she kept on her the corner of her desk. Anyone was welcome to take a piece, and they often did, becoming acquaintances with Jackie in the process. Jackie was truly one of the last great listeners in this world, who would be reserved and respectful, but would signal just how she really felt with the subtle arching of her eyebrows.

Those closest to Jackie say she was a true philanthropist, often donating her time and money to charities she loved and never expecting any praise or notoriety in return. She was dedicated to animals, especially cats. She lavished love and attention on cats in need of a home, often finding a way to make her home their home. Five such pets survive Jackie. She was also a friend to the local veterans organizations, a voracious reader, a crochet enthusiast and an avid crystal and gem collector. A very private woman, she had an easy laugh and a quick smile for those she brought into her life.

She is survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Duane and Jan Hilton; her sister, Terry; and her friends at Northern Inyo Hospital.

Those wishing to remember Jackie are encouraged to make a donation in her honor to either Inyo/Mono County Animal Resources & Education (ICARE), P.O. Box 76, Bishop, CA 93515,
www.icareforpets.org; or, to the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 8988, 484 Short Street, Bishop, CA 93514.

Harry Andreas Sr.

Grampa Harry as everyone called him, touched the hearts of a lot of people. He was a very talented man who had a lot of hobbies during his walk on earth. “Grandpa” Harry was a great gardener and every year you could catch him sitting somewhere with a ice chest full of tomatoes and chilies, ready to sell them to anybody who wanted to buy some.

Then it was off to the river to fish, that was another one of his passions. He would also, tie fishing flies that many of us would use for fishing, he also sold them to the local sporting goods stores along with anyone who wanted to use them.

Grampa Harry’s greatest passion was his love for playing music with family and friends and was very proud to play music with his son Harry Jr. and grandsons Jeffrey and the late Harry III.

Grandpa’s band was the great Harry Casino and The Gamblers Band” singing and playing favorites like Boney Maroney, White Lightening and Silver Wings. Grampa worked a lot of jobs in his lifetime, but the job he loved the most was Asphalt work, working along with family and friends until he retired and then it was “Fish On”.

Grampa liked to fish at pyramid Lake and would take anyone who wanted to go. He caught a 13.5 Lb. cutthroat and received a certificate from the Nevada Fish and Game for it. It was then we all had to go fish Pyramid Lake, but Grampa still caught the biggest fish.

Dr. Tomi Bortolazzo mourned

The Board of Directors and all medical and staff at Mammoth Hospital are shocked and deeply saddened by the sudden and unexpected death of our colleague and friend, Dr. Tomi Bortolazzo.

SONY DSC

SONY DSC

“Dr. B” served as the sole urologist for the Eastern Sierra for the past 10 years. She was a respected member of the Northern Inyo Hospital and Mammoth Hospital Medical Staffs and served the past two years as the Chief of Staff at Mammoth Hospital.

She grew up frequently visiting the Mammoth Lakes area and made the transition here in 2005 with her husband, Ron, and two sons Randy and Russel. In addition to being a gifted physician and surgeon, wife, and mother, she loved the mountains and was an avid outdoor enthusiast and accomplished athlete who enjoyed skiing, hiking, riding dirt bikes, and flying.

Dr. Bortolazzo did her undergraduate training at University of California San Diego and was the captain of the women’s soccer team her senior year. She obtained her medical degree at Chicago Medical School and completed her residency training in Urology at Loma Linda University Medical Center.

She practiced for 11 years at San Antonio Community Hospital where she rose to be the first female Chief of Staff overseeing the activity of more than 500 physicians.

As one of relatively few female physicians in the specialty of Urology, Dr. Bortolazzo learned to stand her ground early on and earned her reputation as a staunch advocate for her patients demanding excellence of herself and all those around her.

She was very committed to providing quality care and responded to the needs of patients at both NIH and Mammoth at all hours of the day and night, on weekends and holidays, and frequently made house calls to check up on her elderly patients. The loss of her knowledge, skill, and compassion to our medical community leaves a great void.

Our hearts go out to her family, many friends and colleagues, and the thousands of patients who thought of her not only as their physician but also their friend.

Services will be held at 1:00 P.M., Saturday, November 21, at the First Presbyterian Church in Bishop for long time Owens Valley resident Richard “Dick” Noles, followed by a reception in Hillis Hall.

Noles3Dick passed away on Wednesday, November 4, 2015 at Northern Inyo Hospital following a year of treatment for Lymphoma Cancer. Dick was born in Palo Alto, on June 23, 1933 to Cathryn and Clifford Noles. He graduated from Bakersfield High School in 1951. Dick spent summers on the Kern River where he met his wife to be, Pat, when both were 13 years old. They were married in 1952 and had two sons, Rick and David.

Dick went to work for Southern Calif Edison in Kernville before transferring to Oxnard, Torrance and to Bishop in 1966, where he retired in 1990. He enjoyed nearly 50 years of volunteer work in the Owens Valley, which he dearly loved.

The success of these efforts he attributed to volunteers who made major contributions in labor, equipment, material, food refreshments and financial support.

Dick NolesOne the first projects was the expansion of the city park, including the pond and gazebo. It took three years to complete that job. In 1988 the Water for Wildlife project was started to introduce water sources in our local mountains to benefit wildlife. This project lasted for twenty years with the instillation of 29 guzzlers. Over 100 volunteers installed the units which are still in operation.

dicknoles.jpg

One of the projects dearest to his heart was to establish an Eastern Sierra ATV Adventure Trails System in Inyo County which continues to be an on going project.

Over the years handicapped platforms have been installed at local ponds. In 1993 he was asked to gather volunteers to monitor radio collars on the Buttermilk deer herd winter range. For the next 5 years deer were monitored to determine the mortality rate and cause of fatalities.

Dick is survived by his wife of 63 years, Pat, two sons, Rick and wife Bonnie of Lee Vining and David and Jeannie of Bishop, five grandchildren, Pete Noles, Garrett Noles, Kari Face and husband Dan, Kristin Noles, Kristi Houston and husband Will. Dick also has 4 great grandchildren, Cameron, Corbin, Riley and Aiden.

Dick was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Bishop for 49 years where he looked upon his friends and his church family.

Richard Martin Kanold
January 1, 1922 – November 11, 2015

Richard (Dick) Kanold died peacefully at his home in Big Pine on November 11, 2015. He is survived by his wife Leslie, 6 children (Rick Lockhart, Norman Kanold, Stephen Kanold, Kathleen Day, Dixie Kanold, and Desiree Tackett-Nuckols), 4 grandchildren (Marisa Kanold, Nicole Guy, Brian Day, and Patrick Lockhart), and 3 great grandchildren (Zander Guy, Roman Guy, and Maddison Lockart).

Kanold

Dick was born in Los Angeles and grew up in the Highland Park area. When war came, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served as an aviation mechanic instructor from 1942-1945. After the war, he settled in Costa Mesa, California, where he met and married Barbara (Hartford) Kanold.

They soon moved to Oxnard, California, to raise a family and start a vending machine business that ultimately grew into a corporation known as Oxnard Automatic Sales, providing amusement and vending services to the communities of Santa Barbara, Ventura, Oxnard, and Camarillo.
He retired in 1987 after selling his business and then fulfilled his dream of moving to Big Pine. He married Leslie (Showalter) Kanold in 1992, and together they have spent the last 23 years enjoying all that the Owens Valley has to offer, from fishing and hiking together to enjoying the various dining venues of the area and participating in the Valley’s many local events.

They also had the opportunity to travel abroad and locally in Southern California to visit family and friends. For several years, Dick also operated a local vending machine route in the Owens Valley. He was a proud member of the Elks Lodge throughout his life and particularly enjoyed the local chapter in Bishop.

Dick will always be remembered for his outgoing personality, sense of humor, and quick wit. Probably his greatest achievement, however, was being a wonderful father, grandfather, and great grandfather to his family. He enjoyed keeping in touch with all of his children throughout his life and always welcomed their family visits with him in Big Pine, where he would plan a host of activities to make their trip fun and entertaining.

He was beloved by all his family and will be sorely missed.

He will be laid to rest at West line Street Cemetery in Bishop on Friday, November 20, 2015. Graveside services will be preceded by a memorial service at Brune Mortuary, 325 West Elm Street, Bishop, at 11 a.m.
