Barbara Bremmer-Price Remembered by Family

Barbara Bremmer-Price, July 28, 1936 January 2, 2010

Barbara Bremmer-Price passed away at the age of 73 on Saturday, January 2, 2010, in Stockton, California, due to congestive heart failure.
Barbara Amy Bisler was born on July 28, 1936, in San Francisco, California, and grew up there with siblings Paul, Larry, Robert and Mary. Barbaras mother, Doris, was a Registered Nurse and had relocated to Lone Pine from San Francisco, accepting a position at Southern Inyo Hospitals surgical center in 1964. At the time, Barbara was working at the Bank of America in San Francisco and struggling as an artist. She decided to accompany Doris to Lone Pine with her son Nicholas Anthony Sherman (Nick), and Barbara became a waitress at the Sportsman Caf where she met Robert (Bob) Bremmer. They formed a family expanding by one soon after with the birth of their daughter, Mary Louise Bremmer, in 1966.
No stranger to hard work, Barbara continued to wait tables, but she and Bob also had several entrepreneurial ventures over the next 17 years including a feed store, Mobil gas stations, and an Arabian horse breeding facility. In 1980, Bob successfully ran for County Supervisor and Barbara continued to work the graveyard shift at Lautens coffee shop. She cemented many close relationships there with a wide variety of people including rowdy cowboys after the bars closed and locals who just couldnt sleep, providing an open ear and sometimes personal counsel (whether they wanted it or not) to Deputies on the graveyard shift who stopped in for coffee. Of course, the Volunteer Fire Department and ambulance crew was a sure visit too after a late night run.
Barbara was close to many in Lone Pine and the Owens Valley. She volunteered enormous hours of her personal time for efforts to make Lone Pine a tourist destination and bring the community together with fun events that made residents happy. The rodeo grounds were utilized extensively with horse shows and gymkhanas that she organized. She led the local horse group and served as the Community Leader for the 4-H program for almost two decades, as well as being involved with the Lone Pine Saddle Club and horse organizations in Bishop over the years. She organized countless Christmas and Easter parades, golf tournaments, Halloween carnivals and Lilac Festivals. The Lilac Festival was a week-long event that included an Easter egg hunt, pet shows, donkey polo, donkey baseball, a parade, a queen contest and other fun things for the community to be involved with. She rescued numerous cats that were scheduled to be put to sleep and provided warm barns and afternoon buffets at their remote Lubken Canyon residence. Bob was not happy about having so many cats, so she had them delivered while Bob wasnt home. When Bob would ask where all the cats were coming from, she would answer with very wide eyes, Bob, I have no idea where theyre coming from. Bob and Barbara were together until Bobs death in 1988.
In the following years, Barbara quit waitressing and went to work for the County of Inyo (Public Works and Sheriffs Departments). She married Richard Price in 1990, but a heart attack caused his death shortly thereafter in 1994. She continued to organize events in her new working environment that brought people together in the workplace (potlucks, short gambling jaunts, Easter banquets and golf tournaments).
In 2002, Barbara retired and moved to Stockton to be closer to her son, Nick and his family. She resided at an assisted living facility where she rekindled her passion for art but also organized poker games. Although often bound to a scooter and an oxygen tank for mobility, she was in the process of planning a group cruise to Mexico the week of her passing.
Barbara is survived by her brothers, Paul, Larry and Robert Bisler, her sister, Mary Louise Houser. Her son, Nick Sherman and Son-in-law Ted Defriese, her daughter, Mary Louise Bremmer-Pritchard, Son-in-law Don Pritchard and her granddaughter, Candace Amy Pritchard.
Funeral services will be held for Barbara Bremmer-Price, on Saturday, January 16, 2010 at 10 a.m. at the Catholic Church in Lone Pine. A graveside service at the Mt. Whitney cemetery and reception at the Mt. Whitney Golf Course will follow. In lieu of flowers please send donations to the attention of Betty Humphrey, Inyo County Sheriffs Department, PO Drawer S, Independence CA 93526. Note Animal Shelter Facility on the memo line.

Gwen Judd Remembered

Gwen Judd used to keep people in Bishop in line on their parking habits, and she spread good cheer in the process. Gwen died January 20th at Northern Inyo Hospital at the age of 81.

Gwen was a familiar site, with her chalk stick and her parking enforcement vehicle, buzzing around town. Somehow when she wrote a ticket and left it on the windshield, it didn’t seem so bad since she was so good-humored.

Gwen’s family said she moved to Bishop in 1958, raised her children and then went to work for the Bishop Police Department as a crossing guard and then as the parking enforcement officer. They said she loved her job and retired after 28 years.

Gwen also served 9 years on the Bishop Park Commission and 4 years on the city planning Commission. She was vice-president and then president of Jr. Woman’s Club and she was a leader in 4-H.

She cared about others and made sure candy for Halloween went to businesses, kids, senior centers and the hospital. Christmas was the same story.

Her family said Gwen never met a stranger and with her quick wit, contagious laugh and smile she had many loyal friends. She is survived by two daughters and one son and many other relatives. Funeral services for Gwen are Friday, January 29th, at 1pm at Brune Mortuary Chapel.

Stan Matlick: 1931-2013

Stanley Allen Matlick, a man who continued his family’s fight for water in the Eastern Sierra, has died.

Stan Matlick

Mr. Matlick passed away Thursday, May 16 at Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno after a brief illness; he lived 81 wonderful years, said his daughter, Margaret. A funeral service is set for Thursday, May 30th, at First United Methodist Church in Bishop at 11 a.m.

Mr. Matlick was born August 21, 1931 in Bishop at home on the family ranch to Edwin and Ella Matlick. He spent his childhood years helping his parents on the Matlick ranch and played a part in creating Bishop history.

Stan graduated from Bishop Union High School in 1949; he continued his education at Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo until he was drafted into the army in 1952. Stan was company clerk in the Korean War, serving two years of active duty and then in the reserves for six years. Stan continued his college education and graduated in 1955.

Stan had met Roberta Rogers while in he was in high school and when she came to Bishop to start her teaching career.

Stan 9

Stan and Roberta were married in 1955 and lived life together for 56 years until Roberta’s passing in 2012.

Stan continued ranching until 1966 when he leased out the land and went to work for the propane companies. He retired in 1984 and became a property manager.

Mr. Matlick was a very active member of the Bishop community. When his children were young, he served in many capacities with the 4-H program. He was very proud of his 52 years of membership in the local Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He also served many years with the Bishop Homecoming and Labor Day Association.

Stan was on the Laws Railroad Museum board for 14 years and he also served on the board for the Eastern Sierra Communty Service District for 29 years.

Stan served in numerous positions during his 50 years in the Bishop Lions Club. He received many honors during this time, including “Citizen of the Year’” and the “Melvin Jones Fellowship Award.” In 2001, Stan was named “Best Friend of the Packers” for the Mule Days celebration.

Sierra Wave’s Benett Kessler said of Mr. Matlick: “It was his family that won the Hillside Decree which kept the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power from pumping water for export from Bishop. He unstintingly stood up against DWP’s harm to the valley, fearlessly returning to court to defend the Hillside Decree. He steadfastly spoke out against the Long Term Water Agrrement. And he famously said, ‘It won’t be worth the paper it was written on.’ Words that ring true today as Inyo suffers with nearly unworkable procedures in that agreement.”

Mr. Matlick checked the pumps as recently as December and January on Bishop Cone and told the Inyo Water Department, Water Commission and Sierra Wave Media that three wells were pumping steadily in the Bishop area in December and January. Matlick said he believed there weren’t enough uses on the Bishop Cone for all that water. He believed some of it went down the aqueduct where it’s not supposed to go.

Water Director Bob Harrington said that his department checked with DWP officials who indicated they needed the pumped water for “stock water and for Buckley Pond.” In January, Harrington said it appeared there were not enough uses going on to justify the amount DWP was pumping. Harrington said Inyo requested that they turn off some pumps. He said DWP told his Department they would shut off one or more.

Stan Matlick initiated that move by DWP.

Stan and his late wife were honored earlier this year by the Bishop City Council. Stan and daughter, Margaret, attended the meeting. Councilwoman Susan Cullen read a statement about the Matlicks and why the Council chose them for the Quarterly Citizen Award.

Cullen listed the many community activities of Roberta and Mr. Matlick’s years of service to the community. She added that Mr. Matlick fought to prevent new DWP wells on the Bishop Cone to preserve the environment.

Benett Kessler, in previous articles, noted it was Stan’s father and family back in the 1930s, who went to court and won the Hillside Decree, an historic court order that prevents the LADWP from pumping water for export in a wide area in and around Bishop and nearly down to Big Pine.

The DWP tried to defeat that order in the 1980s, but Stan fought back. He personally stood up to Los Angeles and funded the legal battle to protect Bishop. It is the only area of the Owens Valley with these protections.

Even when it wasn’t popular, Mr. Matlick stood up at scores of meetings over the years on behalf of the Owens Valley environment. His famous quote years ago haunts Inyo County today. When citizens fought against the Inyo-DWP Long Term Water Agreement, Matlick said, “You will find this agreement isn’t worth the paper it’s written on.”

There were many others in the area who privately commented how the Matlicks had supported them in a time of need, changing the course of their lives for the better.

Stan loved the outdoors. He enjoyed fishing, camping and hiking. He worked for several pack stations in the area taking pack trips as the cook.

Mr. Matlick is survived by his son, Bob, and wife, Diane; daughter, Margaret; grandson, Kyle, and wife, Rebecca; and stepgrandsons Jacob and Zachary James.

Funeral services Thursday, May 30th, 11 a.m, at First United Methodist Church, internment will follow at West Line Street Cemetary with the VFW officiating.

The family requests in lieu of flowers donations be made to the Laws Museum, the Friendship Center at the Methodist Church or the Owens Valley Water Committee.

Dave Haas: A life well-lived

Dave Haas of Lone Pine recently received the Inyo Register’s “Citizen of the Year Award” just 6 weeks ago in recognition of his support and accomplishments in Lone Pine. This morning word came that he has passed away…and he will be sorely missed.

Dave Haas was a major supporter of the LP Chamber’s photography contest. Seen here with his longtime companion Lynn Bunn and competition winner Bob Rice of Bishop at the awarding of the prizes in 2011.

Dave Haas was a major supporter of the LP Chamber’s photography contest. Seen here with his longtime companion Lynn Bunn and competition winner Bob Rice of Bishop at the awarding of the prizes in 2011.

A former councilman and founding member of the City of Murrieta, Haas had a very successful career in construction. On losing his wife years ago, he moved to Lone Pine…and became one of its most generous philanthropists.

Haas was proud to support the Wounded Warriors Project and all the men and women in uniform serving their country. He also provided generous support to the Southern Inyo Hospital, the Lone Pine Film Museum, the Lone Pine Chamber of Commerce, and to Future Farmers of America at the local high school. He donated money to projects for town beautification projects as well such as the plants and flowers in front of the LP Film Museum at the south end of town, the Chamber of Commerce in the middle of town, and also trees alongside the highway at Spainhower Park at the north end of town.

Haas was also involved in assisting his longtime companion Lynn Bunn build the Lone Pine Skate Park for community youth and visitors. In one of his last efforts, despite poor health and in considerable pain, he bought the old Ellis Ford Motors building which had been a longtime eyesore undergoing construction on Main Street in Lone Pine for many years. He turned it into a showcase for the town and the building has been in constant use for community meetings, dinners, receptions, dances and even provides the local office for Fourth District County Supervisor Matt Kingsley.

He said many times, “I’ve had people ask me why I spend so much money…and all I have to say is that I believe that anyone who dies with a bank full of money dies a failure.” By any measure, Dave Haas was a successful− and yes, a very rich man− upon his death.

Kathy Henderson: 1933-2013

Kathy Henderson, beloved wife, mother, friend and civic leader, passed away at Renown Medical Center in Reno on Oct. 13, 2013 surrounded by family. Kathy was a born-again Christian who loved her family and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Image0004

Born Sept. 27, 1933 in Kingman, Ariz. to Leslie and Amy Roe, Kathy was raised in several small mining towns in northern Arizona with her older brother Chuck, sister Ruby and younger brother John. She graduated from Mojave County High School with her brother Chuck in 1950 where she was the class darling. She attended Arizona State University and received a degree and teaching credential in elementary education in 1954. Upon graduation she accepted her first position teaching fifth grade at Chandler Junior High School near Phoenix.

Kathy’s mother, Amy Shelton, grew-up on a desert ranch in Arizona neighboring the Willows Ranch owned by the Imus family and Amy developed a close friendship with the eldest daughter Ina. Both family ranches were lost during the Depression but Amy and Ina kept in touch as they married and raised their families. Through this life-long friendship Kathy met her sole-mate Elvie Henderson, Ina’s son, who was raised in Bishop. Elvie and Kathy were married on June 9, 1956 in Phoenix and initially settled in southern California where Elvie was employed in the aerospace industry, while Kathy continued to teach. Her teaching career ended with the arrival of her children, including Don and Hugh in rapid succession, and a later surprise of daughter, Pamela.

During the early years of raising a family, Kathy became active in the community, starting first in the Church and progressing into community relief programs and serving on the County Grand Jury. In 1967, the Simi Valley Chamber of Commerce honored her as their Woman of the Year for her leadership in providing family relief during an extensive and damaging fire storm.

With a desire to raise a growing family in a small town and to be closer to family, Elvie and Kathy began to look for ways to settle in Bishop. Their hope was soon realized with the purchase of Coach and Camper Service in 1971, beginning a 30-year family business with Elvie and Kathy working side by side.

Also with the move to Bishop, Elvie and Kathy’s faith grew and strengthened, first by joining the Bishop Methodist Church and then Church on the Mountain at Crowley Lake. Through this fellowship they made many close and lasting friendships. Their testament to the congregation was their growing faith and the example they set of a loving and supportive marriage.

However, it did not take long for Kathy to start longing for a return to the community service she loved. This return began slowly with a few selected organizations like the BUHS Booster Club and progressed to more involved passions like the Bishop Chamber of Commerce and County Grand Jury. In 1995, Kathy was appointed to fill a vacant position on the Bishop City Council that lead to a continuing commitment extending more than 12 years, including three elected terms and three years as mayor. Kathy thrived and enjoyed this phase in her life by immersing herself in City business, improvement and development and collaboration with numerous community organizations.

While commitments of family, church, work and community service lead to a busy life, the Hendersons also found time for family gatherings, class reunions and occasional travel, including trips to Israel, Ecuador, Washington, DC and Hawaii. On their 50th Anniversary Elvie and Kathy hosted their children and families, and Elvie’s sisters, Cleo and Mary Lou, to a sight-seeing tour of Alaska and the Canadian Yukon by cruise ship, train, boat and bus. What a grand and memorable adventure!
